Film Submissions


  • Film submissions for 23rd Ji.hlava IDFF (2019) will open in February 2019.



  • Deadline for films produced in 2017: March 31, 2018.
    Please note that regarding films produced in 2017, we only accept works that were finished between September and December 2017. As for films produced earlier, only those are eligible for submission that have not been made and premiered in Europe.
  • Deadline for films produced in 2018: May 31, 2018.
  • You can also submit a rough cut of your film by August 25, 2018.


Submission conditions for the 22nd Ji.hlava IDFF 2018

  • Ji.hlava IDFF has no entry fee. Film submissions are free of charge.
  • We also consider animated documentaries, online documentary projects or any of the cross-genre TV formats (docudrama, docusoap, reality show or mockumentary, virtual reality).
  • The length of the film is not important, we accept submissions of both feature and short-length documentaries.

  • Ji.hlava IDFF has been chosen by the European Film Academy (EFA) as one of the European documentary festivals to pre-select films for the European Award for the Best Documentary Film of the Year. Each of the festivals nominates one film directed by a European director and released in world premiere directly to EFA’s pre-selection. EFA considers all other world premieres of European films and may add them to the pre-selection.
  • Also, winners of the Short Joy award will be eligible for the pre-selection in the Documentary Short Subject category of the Academy Awards®.
  • Winners of the Best World Documentary Film award and Best Central and East European Documentary Film award will be eligible for the pre-selection in the Documentary Feature Subject category of the Academy Awards®.
  • The Ji.hlava Film Fund provides in-kind grants for visual and sound post-production of mid-length or feature-length documentary and hybrid films at the stage of production or post-production originating in Central and Eastern Europe.
