Amos Gitai is one of the most important contemporary Israeli directors, and with the film News from Home he concludes the trilogy in which in 1980, 1998 and 2005 he recorded the lives of the inhabitants of a villa in Jerusalem. The stories of the people who live in this home reflect the deeper substance of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. _ The director re-visited the family of the Palestinian doctor who owned the villa until 1948. The family, which has lived in Jerusalem for hundreds of years, has never accepted the appropriation of their property. Even the current owner regards it as unjust: It is something that happened, I had no part in it, and I have no means of redressing it, she says. _ The director traces the fates of people who have had some ties to this home, and finds them in Canada, Jordan, and in Gaza. Gitai listens to them tell tales connected with the home, and as in his previous films he plays more the role of archaeologist than judge. _ The Berlin film festival set up a video installation that used material from all three films, and on twenty monitors created a fascinating labyrinth of stories and memories, a metaphor for historical events. _ A book of essays was also published under the title News from Home, the authors of which explore the themes of religion, identity and borders, and migration and exile.
