Long shots, slow camera movement and slow action on the edge of bearable, black-and-white images which reveal rather than show. Sergej Loznica radically transposes the spiritual-film tradition but remains strictly rooted in the reality. His optics size the director against the documentary tradition in this case, against his only idol, Grierson's Fishermen. White sky, white snow, the line of the horizon, wind, black silhouettes on an icy plain, Russian fishermen from a small co-operative pull the nets and break the ice. A day on the White Sea.
