Synopsis

Pasolini's poetic and political reflection on his visit to the ancient town of San'á, the current capital of Yemen. Back then it was the capital of the Yemen Arab Republic fighting against the Southern People's Democratic Yemen controlled by Marxist factions. The camera pans along the few shops and new administrative buildings, everyday life is mainly present in children's shouting. Monarchy, republic, politics, discrimination, progress, introduction of capitalism, democracy - all these are too modern words for the narrow lanes where ground workers are building the first road with only one roller. Although the filmmaker shows his ability to understand a different cultural spirit, he fails to accept it in political sense.
