Synopsis

For a long time the leader of the revolution, which the Bolsheviks had hoped would grip the entire world, was not depicted in film. Lenin first appeared on the big screen three years after his death on the 10th anniversary of the revolution, when he was played by an amateur lookalike. Originally depicted in a documentary style, under Stalinism Lenin became a more abstract figure – a prudent and ever-triumphant leader. In the second half of the 20th century, depictions of Lenin were based not just on the little documentary footage that existed of him, but also to a significant degree on the way he was depicted (especially in terms of his physical gestures) on monuments and memorials.
