Synopsis

Our typical image of the storming of the Winter Palace by the revolutionary masses is based on the 1920 mass spectacle, whose first and most famous cinematic reconstruction was shot by Sergei Eisenstein in 1927. In reality, the Tsar’s family had moved out of the palace in 1915 and established a military hospital there. It was also the seat of the provisional government, which was arrested without resistance in the early hours of 26 October by a group of about ten revolutionaries – but only after a senseless siege of the building that killed dozens of helpless patients.
