Film Form No. 1

The sounds of a wild sitar, the image of a boy’s face or a dancing body melt into blurred fields of colour in which the outlines of bodies or the film itself seem to dissolve. The harmonic movements leave traces on the film’s surface as the fragments of the body are covered by geometric grids of their possible trajectories.

Stan VanDerBeek (1927–1984) was a legendary American avant-garde artist. In the 1960s, he built his Movie Drome movie theatre, in which he screened his films from multiple projectors onto the domelike ceiling. He is known for the use of collage in his films.
