An exploration of judicial and individual responses to crimes against humanity, the film looks at the Nuremberg Trials and the wars in Algeria and Vietnam. Unlike in his earlier documentaries, Ophuls here created a more personal testimony, including his family and making use of other techniques of participatory documentaries.

“I think it’s the most personal and sincere work I’ve ever done.” M. Ophuls
