An inquisitive body contends with the elements and desires on a difficult journey through rugged terrain, building up to chimerical scenes of the struggle to reach a man, the door, the sun and one’s position in the game. Space distorts into intangible forms, obscuring the continuously escaping goal, whilst the solidity of rock, the power of water and the unconfined air remain an intoxicating certainty.

Maya Deren (1917–1961), a leading personality of avant-garde film, created works characterised by introspection, spirituality, and explorations of the human body in movement. Meshes of the Afternoon (1943), co-directed with her husband, Alexander Hackenschmied, is a key American avant-garde film.
