What happens when the Chinese government builds a French village in Sichuan province? A detached camera floats among local figures and brightly coloured facades, creating a portrait of a space where kitschy idyll maintained by an authoritarian regime mixes with bizarre situations and brutal everyday life.

“Bailu, a small village in Sichuan province, was destroyed by an earthquake in 2008. The Chinese government decided to build a French village in its place.”

French filmmaker Nicolas Boone began as a visual artist and performer, but gradually got into film directing. He makes primarily short-length films – both documentaries and fictional movies. Over the past few years, many of them have ended up at renowned film festivals (FID Marseille, IndieLisboa, IFF Rotterdam, and others). Boone’s only full-length documentary to date is the social fresco 200% (2011).
