Synopsis
This skilfully constructed indictment of America’s poor social policies, presented through the story of eight families, escalates into a criticism of the country’s political system. A combination of statistical data and personal tales creates a corrosive portrait of people robbed of the American dream, whose sense of hopelessness is heightened by the chosen time of year.

The human dimension goes hand in hand with the political. One of the film’s most moving moments is an interview with the prematurely grown-up children of poor parents, fated to repeat the mistakes of the older generation, without hope for education or success.
