Ivan Martin Jirous

Is a poet, art historian, essayist, and prominent figure in the Czech literary-musical underground of the 1970s and 1980s. After studying art history at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, he was editor of the magazine Výtvarná práce (Artwork). He then alternated continuously between manual jobs and prison time, and during the normalisation period he was imprisoned for nine years, one of the reasons cited for this being the ‘scandalous texts’ of the band Plastic People of the Universe, of which he was the artistic leader. His most recently published work is titled Dross.
