Galina Kopaněva

Important film historian and critic, university lecturer, and leading figure of Czech film clubs (independent repertory theaters). Recognized as an expert in the history of central and eastern European film, Kopaněva helped found the Czechoslovak film club movement in the 1960s and co-founded the magazine Film a doba (Film and Time). Her lectures and seminars helped to form the cinematic views of several generations of Czech filmmakers, critics, and historians. And her texts and lectures have had a fundamental influence on how audiences have viewed and interpreted film of the Czech “New Wave.” She continues to publish in Film and Time and in the biweekly cultural magazine A2. In 2006, she contributed to the anthology Věra Chytilová mezi námi (Věra Chytilová Among Us, 2006).
