Thomas Elsaesser

Elsaesser, one of today’s most important film theoreticians, is a professor at the University of Amsterdam, and also lectures at universities throughout Europe and overseas, including Yale, UCLA, and New York University. From 2002 to 2005, he headed the Cinema Europe research project, which published many different monographs on the current state of European film and on the functioning of international film festivals. He is the author or editor of many important books of theory and film history, including Early Cinema: Space Frame Narrative (1990), Weimar Cinema and After (2000), European Cinema - Face to Face with Hollywood (2005), and Studying Contemporary American Film (2002). In 2008, his study of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis was published in Czech.
