Ivan Havel

Scientist and former director of the Centre for Theoretical Studies – a shared institution of Charles University and the Czech Academy of Sciences. He is also editor-in-chief of Vesmír (Universe) magazine, and is the brother of former Czech president Václav Havel. He studied automatisation and computers at the Electrotechnical Faculty of the Czech University of Technology in Prague. In 1971, he received his doctorate from the University of California in Berkeley. In the early 1990s, he received a doctorate in artificial intelligence from Charles University’s Third Medical Faculty. He currently works at the Centre for Theoretical Studies of Charles University and the Czech Academy of Sciences, where he is involved in the study of cybernetics, artificial intelligence, robotics, cognitive sciences, and the related philosophical questions. In 2008, he was awarded Charles University’s Gold Model.
