CASE STUDY: Why Can Digital File Sharing Be Good for the Creative Industry?

Description

For years, film studios and music labels have been claiming that they are losing revenues due to digital piracy. The perceived antithetical relationship between creative industries and online file-sharing dominates policy debate and media discourse. In this talk, I will debunk the myth of “file-sharing killing the creative industries” by referring to the research that my colleagues and I conducted in response to the 2010 Digital Economy Act in the UK, which reflects a common policy stand towards file-sharing across many European countries.
